Capybara Cafe Thailand: Is Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai Worth It?

Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai is a capybara cafe in Thailand where you can pet, feed, and hang out with real capybaras. I visited twice during my latest Thailand trip, and I can confidently say it was 1000% worth it for me.

Are you sensing some slight enthusiasm?

I’m an animal lover through and through. Give me the opportunity to interact with a giant, adorable rodent and there was never really a question of whether I was going inside.

During my first visit, I somehow spent four hours hanging out with capybaras, meerkats, ducks, and turtles. I loved it so much that I returned a second time with friends before leaving Chiang Mai.

Here’s everything I wish I had known before accidentally stumbling across one of my favorite experiences in Chiang Mai.

The official website currently gives visitors different expectations than what I personally experienced, particularly regarding timing and animal food. I’ll explain those differences throughout this guide so you know what happened during my visits without assuming yours will be identical.

How I Accidentally Discovered a Capybara Cafe in Chiang Mai

Before my latest trip to Thailand, I didn’t even know capybara cafes existed.

I discovered Capybara Coffee completely by accident on my first evening in Chiang Mai.

I had just landed and was jet-lagged, wandering around near the Old City wall while desperately trying to stay awake long enough to give myself some hope of a normal sleep schedule.

That’s when I spotted the cafe along the main road near Tha Phae Gate.

I saw capybaras and meerkats on the sign, assumed it was simply a cute themed cafe, and made a mental note to check the opening hours.

I figured I would come back for my morning coffee the next day.

Oh, how wrong I was.

I walked in the following morning and quickly realized there were actual capybaras back there that I could pet.

AND meerkats.

I was not emotionally prepared.

My First Visit to Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai

I walked into the cafe, bought my ticket at the front, ordered a hot mocha, and was taken into the back garden area.

Excited doesn’t come close to describing how I felt.

There were four sleepy little capybaras right in front of me.

I had arrived right at opening time on a weekday, and somehow I had the entire place to myself.

One of the capybaras looked up as I entered and rolled over as though she was ready for some attention.

The caretaker introduced us.

“This one is Lily.”

I don’t want to be dramatic, but it was love at first sight.

Feeding the Capybaras

Lily really perked up once the basket of capybara food came out.

I fed her long pieces of some type of grass, and I cannot adequately explain how entertaining it was watching her eat.

Her little mouth moved continuously while the grass became shorter and shorter, inching toward her face until it finally disappeared.

Then came the noises.

Just when I thought capybaras couldn’t possibly get any cuter, they started making the most adorable little high-pitched sounds.

Eventually, the others woke up and decided it was time for some attention too.

Animal food was included when I visited. The official website now lists capybara snacks separately, so that part of your experience may be different.

Would I still buy some?

Without hesitation.

But I’m also the person who can easily be conned into sharing half my dinner with whatever cute stray cat or dog happens to find me while traveling.

Know your weaknesses.

Yes, Capybaras Get the Zoomies

Eventually, all four capybaras decided they needed a stretch.

They ran over and jumped into their pool for a swim.

This is also where I learned—both from observation and a conversation with the caretaker—that capybaras sometimes like to, um…

Take care of business in the water.

Which helps keep the cafe incredibly clean. Moving right along.

They swam in circles, played together, and generally looked like they were living their best little capybara lives.

Then they climbed out.

And I witnessed something I was absolutely not prepared for:

Capybara zoomies.

Guys.

They got the zoomies.

Watching these chunky little creatures suddenly race around the garden might genuinely be one of the cutest things I have ever seen.

After all that exercise, naturally, it was time for another nap.

They stretched out across the ground and in the straw bedding provided for them.

And that was when I finally remembered I had ordered coffee.

The Coffee I Completely Forgot About

If you’ve been reading Be Free and Travel for a while, you know how seriously I take my coffee.

And yet my poor mocha had been sitting abandoned on a lonely table while I completely forgot it existed.

Apparently, capybaras outrank caffeine.

Who knew?

While the capys rested, I finally sat down and enjoyed my drink.

I honestly couldn’t tell you whether it was the best mocha I’ve ever had.

My brain was far too preoccupied with the adorable creatures surrounding me to properly register the coffee.

The cafe itself was cute, colorful, and very clean.

There were bright murals and fun capybara-themed decorations, including adorable capybara tissue boxes.

There were tables, chairs, and sofas available, although I spent plenty of time sitting on the floor near the animals.

Thailand really knows how to commit to a themed cafe. If wonderfully over-the-top cafes are your thing, you may also want to see about visiting Lalitta Cafe in Chiang Rai, where the experience involves waterfalls, misty gardens, and a surprisingly affordable Thai massage.

And Then They Brought Out a Baby Meerkat

Because apparently my morning wasn’t already delightful enough, one of the caretakers introduced me to a baby meerkat.

She asked if I wanted to feed it a bottle.

You already know my answer.

She let the little meerkat out of its enclosure, and instead of caring about me, it immediately became obsessed with my shoes.

The caretaker explained that the meerkats seemed to have a thing for footwear.

I was wearing sandals, so its tiny little hands repeatedly pawed at my feet and tickled my toes.

At this point, could the day possibly get any better?

Apparently, yes.

Capybaras Are Basically Pot-Bellied Dogs With Webbed Feet

By this point, I had somehow already been at the cafe for around two hours.

I had completely lost track of time.

A couple of other visitors finally came in and began interacting with some of the capybaras.

Meanwhile, my girl Lily looked at me as though she had a very important request.

Belly rubs.

Guys, I am convinced capybaras are basically pot-bellied dogs with webbed feet.

Lily loved having her belly rubbed.

Then, while I was lying there petting her, she rolled over into me and cuddled against me.

Be still my heart.

I melted.

There was no Anna anymore.

Just a puddle of joy and love lying next to a capybara.

I Somehow Stayed for Four Hours

My first visit eventually lasted around four hours.

Four.

Hours.

What felt like a few minutes turned into most of a morning.

I also met ducks and turtles, including one turtle that shared my name.

Eventually, another group arrived and I decided I should probably continue with the rest of my day.

I promised I would come back before leaving Chiang Mai.

And that next time, I would bring friends.

I kept that promise.

My Second Visit Was Much Busier

My first visit was on a weekday right at opening time.

At that point, the Chiang Mai location had only been open for about three weeks, which probably helped explain how I somehow managed to get the place almost entirely to myself.

My second visit was very different.

I returned on a Sunday afternoon with three friends from the aerial arts retreat I was attending.

It was considerably busier.

Even with more people there, we still had plenty of opportunities to pet and feed the capybaras and interact with the meerkats.

This time, they also brought out watermelon for us to feed the capys.

There was a family visiting with several children who looked to be roughly elementary to middle-school age, and they appeared every bit as delighted as I was.

My friends and I stayed around an hour and a half before eventually checking out the merchandise near the entrance.

Naturally, I left with a cute capybara water bottle.

What Is Visiting Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai Actually Like?

My experience was incredibly relaxed.

Both times I visited, I simply walked in, bought my ticket at the front, ordered my drink, and entered the animal area.

I wasn’t placed into a group or asked to wait for a scheduled session.

The capybaras roamed freely through the space.

You could sit at one of the tables, relax on the sofas, sit on the floor, pet the animals, feed them, or simply watch them wander around.

The capybaras regularly approached people on their own.

Some would put their front feet up when they thought food might be involved.

Others seemed perfectly content asking for scratches and attention.

The meerkats also moved around during supervised interactions.

Staff members were present to watch over both the animals and guests.

They chatted with visitors, answered questions, and enforced rules when necessary.

For example, visitors were not allowed to pick up the meerkats during my visit.

The official Capybara Coffee website currently states a 30-minute visit, which is clearly very different from what I experienced.

I wouldn’t assume you’ll be able to stay for hours like I did, but I also wouldn’t assume every visit operates exactly the same way.

Is 30 Minutes Enough?

For me personally?

It would go very fast.

I spent four hours there during my first visit and around an hour and a half during my second.

Neither visit felt particularly long to me because I was having so much fun.

If you’re given more flexibility during your visit, I would happily allow at least an hour to enjoy your drink, interact with the animals, and take photos without rushing.

But if my only option had been a 30-minute visit?

I still absolutely would have gone.

And I would have loved every second.

How Much Does Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai Cost?

During my first visit, I paid 400 THB for admission and 130 THB for my mocha, making my total 530 THB.

The current official prices are summarized in the Quick Facts table above rather than repeating every individual charge again here.

Based on those listed prices, an adult currently needs at least 480 THB for admission and the least expensive drink, or roughly $15 USD at recent exchange rates.

If you want capybara food too, expect the total to be closer to 580 THB, or roughly $18 USD.

Exchange rates move, so consider the USD amounts approximate.

For the experience I had, I consider that very affordable.

Is Capybara Coffee Worth It for Budget Travelers?

Absolutely, in my opinion.

Being a budget traveler doesn’t mean avoiding every attraction that costs money.

It means figuring out which experiences are worth spending your travel budget on.

I got to interact with animals I had never encountered before, take tons of photos and videos, learn more about them from the caretakers, and create one of my favorite memories from Chiang Mai.

That’s an easy yes for me.

Of course, whether it’s worth the money for you is something only you can decide.

If cute animals send you into the same complete state of bliss they send me into, I have a feeling you’ll consider it money very well spent.

If you think capybaras are neat but animals don’t carry quite the same emotional weight for you, another Chiang Mai experience might rank higher on your list.

And if you’re traveling Thailand on an exceptionally tight daily budget, 500-ish baht may represent a meaningful portion of what you’ve allowed yourself to spend that day.

For me, Capybara Coffee fits comfortably into an affordable Thailand trip.

My Thoughts on Animal Welfare at Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai

Any time I visit an attraction involving animals, I pay attention to how those animals appear to be treated.

I can only share what I personally observed during my two visits.

The capybaras moved freely around their space and could choose whether they wanted to interact with people.

They had access to fresh water and a pool.

They rested wherever they felt comfortable, including on the ground and in their straw bedding.

The entire space was extremely clean.

There was also a sink available for guests to wash their hands.

Staff members stayed nearby and monitored interactions.

I saw them enforce rules intended to protect the animals, including preventing visitors from picking up meerkats and making sure the meerkats weren’t eating food intended for the capybaras.

Most importantly, I personally did not observe any behavior from the animals that concerned me.

They regularly approached visitors themselves and seemed genuinely interested in food, attention, and interaction.

Capybara Coffee states on its official website that it prioritizes animal welfare and describes the animals as living in a cruelty-free environment with room to move and interact. That is the company’s description of its own practices rather than an independent certification.

I prefer to separate what the business says from what I can personally tell you.

During my two visits, I felt comfortable with what I personally observed.

Best Time to Visit Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai

Based on my two visits, I would go in the morning if you can.

My weekday morning visit was wonderfully quiet.

My Sunday afternoon visit was much busier.

Obviously, I can’t promise you’ll have the place to yourself just because you arrive early.

The cafe is much more established now than it was during my visit.

But morning has another advantage:

The photos.

The lighting during my morning visit was softer and much more flattering than the harsh afternoon light during my second visit.

Chiang Mai was also extremely hot during my April trip, with temperatures around 100°F.

The afternoon felt considerably hotter than the morning.

So for the potential of smaller crowds, cooler temperatures, and better photo lighting, morning would be my first choice.

If you’re spending more time in Northern Thailand, Chiang Rai also makes an easy addition. I loved dressing up in a traditional Thai dress while visiting the White Temple in Chiang Rai, which was a completely different but equally memorable experience from my time with the capys.

Photography Tips for Capybara Coffee

I don’t think you need an elaborate photography strategy here.

You need one main thing:

Have your camera ready when the food comes out.

Feeding gives you some of the cutest photo and video opportunities.

If you’re standing while offering food, a capybara may even rise onto its back legs trying to reach it.

The staff also kindly helped take some photos of me during my quiet morning visit.

I wouldn’t count on that being possible during a busy period, though.

If you’re traveling solo, consider bringing a small selfie stick or phone stand.

At one point, I propped my phone against my backpack to record a video while cuddling with Lily.

That worked perfectly when I had the place mostly to myself.

With lots of people—or capybaras zooming around—that setup might not be quite as practical.

And definitely take video.

Photos are adorable, but hearing their little noises and watching capybara zoomies is even better.

What Should You Wear?

You don’t need special clothes to visit.

The animals and environment were very clean during my visits, so this isn’t an experience where I would expect to leave covered in dirt.

That said, you are interacting with animals.

Expect the unexpected.

The capybaras also swim, so there’s always a chance one could emerge from the pool and give you a slightly damp hello.

I wore pants during my first visit and a dress during my second.

Both were fine.

If you think you’ll want to sit on the floor with the capybaras, pants are definitely easier.

You keep your shoes on.

And if you’re wearing sandals?

Just know the meerkats may consider your toes entertainment.

You’ve been warned.

How to Get to Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai

Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai City is in the Tha Phae area near Chiang Mai’s Old City.

I stayed at Vieng Mantra Hotel, and the cafe was only around a five-minute walk away.

I didn’t notice much obvious parking immediately around the cafe.

If you’re staying near the Old City, walking may be the easiest option.

Otherwise, Grab, a taxi, or a motorbike taxi should make getting there easy.

Grab rides around Chiang Mai were extremely affordable during my trip, especially compared with what I’m used to paying in the United States.

Do You Need a Reservation?

I didn’t.

I walked in on both visits.

My first visit took only a minute or so to purchase admission and order my drink.

My second visit with a group of four took slightly longer because we ordered separately, but the process was still easy.

However, I visited when the Chiang Mai cafe was extremely new.

As it continues gaining popularity, things can change.

Check the official Capybara Coffee Thailand website or Chiang Mai Instagram shortly before your visit rather than assuming your walk-in experience will be identical to mine.

One thing I didn’t realize when I first stumbled across the Chiang Mai cafe is that Capybara Coffee has expanded around Thailand.

The official website currently lists the following locations:

And that Chiang Mai resort?

It’s officially on my list for my next trip to Thailand.

Because apparently spending four hours with capybaras wasn’t enough for me.

So, Is Capybara Coffee Chiang Mai Worth Visiting?

If you’ve made it this far, you can probably guess my answer.

Yes. A thousand times yes.

It was one of those completely unexpected travel experiences I never planned for and ended up absolutely loving.

I didn’t arrive in Thailand with “cuddle a capybara” anywhere on my itinerary.

I didn’t even know this place existed.

One jet-lagged walk through Chiang Mai led to me meeting Lily, feeding a baby meerkat, watching capybaras swim, witnessing capybara zoomies, forgetting about my beloved coffee, and returning a few days later because once simply wasn’t enough.

That spontaneity is one of the things I love most about travel.

You can research and plan every detail, but sometimes the memories that stay with you come from something you never knew to look for.

For me, Capybara Coffee was one of those moments.
