I made the mistake of booking a big bus tour for my first Northern Lights tour in Tromso and it was not a pleasant experience. It was the only Tromso day trip I took that did not provide an arctic suit and boots. Even with all of my own layers it didn’t take long before I became a complete popsicle in the cold night air.

The big bus tours are cheaper for a reason, and often include less. Dinner was not included on ours, and even though we ate beforehand, we wound up starving after spending hours shivering. That resulted in us buying overpriced Burger King back in Tromso after the tour at 2am.

I only recommend booking big bus tours like this one here if you are on a tight budget. The extras add up, like the photos they charge you for at the end. You’re better off just spending the extra money up front I think and getting a better experience for it.

On a positive note, this tour offers 50% off an additional tour the next night if you’re not lucky enough to spot the lights on your original tour. It’s subject to availability, but I haven’t seen any of the small group tours offer this benefit.

My Personal Experience

As someone who loves adventure and trying new things, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go dog sledding during my visit to Tromso.

My friend and I took turns mushing the dog sled while the other one rode in the sled. When it was my turn, I found it to be more challenging than anticipated.

My big rubber boots they provided made it difficult to feel the wooden prongs under my feet. I ended up flying off the back in a superman position before face planting in the snow.

My friend had to throw the anchor to stop the sled. When I got up, I was laughing so hard and so was my friend. I started running back towards the sled, but running in those boots resulted in me face planting again. It felt like I was living a funny scene in a movie!

What made this experience even more unforgettable was the fact that we went on a night tour under the mesmerizing northern lights. It was truly magical to glide through the snow-covered landscape illuminated by dancing green lights above us.

Unfortunately, dog sledding under the northern lights is no longer offered. However, dog sledding is still an incredible adventure worth experiencing!
